Catalan Bay

Catalan Bay is a picturesque seaside village in Gibraltar with a rich history and a unique cultural heritage. Its history is closely tied to the broader history of Gibraltar and the diverse influences that have shaped the territory over the centuries.

This beach area that is now known as Catalan Bay has a history dating back to ancient times. It was initially settled by the Moors during their occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Throughout its history, Catalan Bay has been known for its strong community fishing traditions. The residents of the village have been engaged in various fishing activities, including net-fishing, line-fishing, and angling. Fishing was a way of life for many generations of Catalan Bay’s residents, and still is for some.

The name “Catalan Bay” reflects the Catalan influence on the village’s history. During the War of Spanish Succession in the early 18th century, Catalan troops were stationed in Gibraltar, and some settled in the bay after the conflict. They brought with them their language, culture, and fishing expertise, which left an enduring mark on the village.

With the British capture of Gibraltar in 1704, Catalan Bay became part of the British Overseas Territory. The British administration recognized the value of the village’s fishing industry and its strategic location along with its distinct cultural heritage.
