About this tour

Embark on a compelling journey through Gibraltar’s military legacy with our Gibraltar WWII Tunnel Tour. Over approximately 3 hours, you’ll explore key historical sites on the Rock, tracing the strategic defense story that spans centuries. This immersive tour begins at the Pillars of Hercules, then leads you through St. Michael’s Cave, the thrilling Skywalk, the Barbary Apes, the Great Siege Tunnels, and culminates deep underground in the World War II Tunnels.

During your visit to the WWII Tunnels, you’ll descend into the heart of Gibraltar’s “underground city”—a vast network of wartime passages carved by Royal Engineers and Canadian tunnelling units. These subterranean chambers housed power stations, hospitals, weapon storage, and troop quarters, creating a self-sufficient stronghold capable of withstanding siege for extended periods.

Discover how up to 16,000 personnel could live below the surface, sustain essential services like water, electricity, medical care, and communication, and remain hidden from enemy forces above.

You’ll also learn about secret wartime operations, including the mysterious Operation Tracer, a covert plan to conceal a small team within the Rock to monitor enemy naval movements in the event of invasion.

You will find archival artifacts, and vivid accounts of life underground. By the end of the tunnel exploration, you’ll have gained a powerful insight into Gibraltar’s crucial role as a military fortress during World War II—an integral chapter in the Rock’s ongoing legacy.
